I have to inform you that Dr. R.C. Robertson,

M.D., H.R.C.8. has been appointed Epidemic Commissioner

and Leader of the British Unit to be sent out to China under

the auspices of the League of Nations in accordance with its

scheme of medical aid set out in League paper No.C.524.M.B63

of the 22nd October, 1937, a copy of which is enclosed for

convenience of reference.

2. As you are doubtless aware, Dr. Robertson'

present position is that of the Head of the Division of

Pathology and Bacteriology at the Lester Institute of Medical

Research, shanghai. The Unit will, when complete, comprise

three other British doctors in addition to Dr. Robertson, but

candidates to fill these posts have not yet been selected.

3. In addition to the British unit, a German-

speaking and a French-speaking unit, headed by Dr. H. Mooser

and Dr. A. Lasnet respectively, are being sent out and their

members left for China on the 10th December by the 8.8.

"André Lebon" from Karseilles. Dr. Robertson proposes to leave

early in January by Impe@ial irways for Hong Kong and expecta

to arrive there on the 10th January. A conference will then,

it is understood, be held at Hong Kong which will be attended

in addition to Dr. Robertson, by Dr. Boroic (Adviser to the

Chinese Ministry of the Interior) and the leaders of the

Polish and French Units. At this conference a decision will

be taken in the light of circumstances then existing as to the
